The Life That Was Never Mine

Someone shared a quote with me that quietly healed something inside me.

“Some people do not stay long enough to be your life. They just make it impossible to keep living one that was never yours.”

I sat with those words for a long time.

Not because they made me miss anyone.

Because they helped me understand myself.

For years, I thought my heartbreak was about losing someone I loved.

Looking back, I think it was also about losing the version of myself who had forgotten how to live honestly.

I had become so practiced at saying “yes” that I no longer recognized my own “no.”

I became whoever the moment required.

Whoever the relationship required.

Whoever the room seemed to approve of.

I wasn’t living my life.

I was performing one.

Then everything fell apart.

At the time, I thought my world was ending.

Now I see something different.

The life that ended…

…was never really mine.

The woman writing these words likes gardens.

She makes tiny worlds out of clay.

She sings too loudly in the car.

She laughs at her own jokes.

She wears red lipstick because it makes her smile.

She loves peace signs, butterflies, birds, books, baking, and rainy afternoons.

She says “no” when she means no.

She says “yes” because she genuinely wants to.

She no longer disappears to make someone else comfortable.

I used to believe losing that relationship meant losing my future.

Now I understand…

I wasn’t losing my future.

I was finally finding my life.

“What in my life feels most like me?”

Whatever it is…

Give yourself permission to choose it.

Not because you have to earn your own life.
