To Thine Own Self Be True
Be True to Your Truest Self
“To thine own self be true.”
For years I loved that quote.
Then one day I realized it was missing something.
Which self?
The frightened self?
The people-pleasing self?
The perfectionist?
The wounded child?
Or the quiet self underneath all of that?
Healing taught me that not every voice inside me deserves to lead my life.
Some voices are echoes of old pain.
Some are survival strategies I learned long ago.
They deserve compassion.
They deserve understanding.
But they don’t have to become my identity.
So today, when I hear the words,
“To thine own self be true,”
I hear them differently.
Be true to the self that loves.
Be true to the self that creates.
Be true to the self that tells the truth.
Be true to the self that laughs.
Be true to the self that wears the big bow because it brings her joy.
Be true to the self that chooses kindness, even when fear suggests otherwise.
My wounded self is part of my story.
She is not the author of it.
I don’t reject her.
I hold her hand.
Then together, we choose to live from the deepest truth we know.
Not from the loudest wound.
But from the truest self.
A Gentle Invitation
Today, pause and notice the voice you’re listening to.
When you make a decision, ask yourself:
“Is this coming from my deepest truth… or from an old wound?”
You don’t have to silence the frightened parts of yourself.
You can simply thank them for trying to protect you…
and gently let your truest self lead the way.
Because becoming yourself isn’t about becoming someone new.
It’s about remembering who has been there all along.
